Mildred Faye Black, 87, passed away Thursday, March 6, at her home in Kanab, Utah, doing what she loved best — feeding the birds.

She was the firstborn of David and Amy Wagstaff of Hilliard. She graduated from Evanston High School in 1956. She worked at the Lincoln Service Station in Evanston.

She married Devon Black in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 14, 1959. She then got to fulfill her dream and moved to Alaska, where she lived for 40 years in Fairbanks and Homer. In Fairbanks, she owned a ceramics shop and, in Homer, she worked as a CPA doing income taxes.

In Alaska, she and Devon raised husky dogs and had a dogsled team. Her talents included sewing and knitting. She knitted numerous Christmas stockings for family and friends, and she sewed for many people.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Amy Wagstaff; husband, Devon Black; her in-laws, Tom and LaVel Black; her sisters, Virginia, Linda and Bertha; her brothers, Ray and Tommy; brothers-in-law, Cecil Hoffman, Dee Allison and Ron Hutchinson; and sisters-in-law, Kathy Wagstaff and Gerri Wagstaff.

She is survived by David (Loretta) Wagstaff of St. George, Utah; Marvin (Annie) Wagstaff of St. George, Utah; Peggy Hutchinson of Gillette; Terry Allison of Coalville, Utah; Jeanette Wagstaff, Roy Wagstaff and Larry (Sue) Wagstaff — all from Evanston.

Her favorite saying was, “I don’t know why I was put on the earth, but I do know it was not to be a mother or a judge.”

A special thanks goes out to the Little Family and her friend Rick Pierson. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
