The Evanston High School boys’ hoops team opened 4A Southwest Quadrant play Thursday in fine fashion Thursday, thumping I-80 rival Green River 75-51, then followed that Friday with a 67-35 win at Lyman to complete the Uinta County season sweep.

With the 2024 State Spirit competition set for this Friday, the Evanston High School cheer team will be led into the competition by a pair of first-time All-State honorees. Sophomore Dalynn Wisenbaker and junior Talia Case were recently selected to the 2023-24 All-State team by the Wyoming Spirit Coaches Association.

The Evanston High School wrestling team had a solid showing at the Thoman-Jackson Invitational in Green River over the weekend, with three wrestlers finishing the tournament undefeated, and the team placing second overall in the Silver Division. The Red Devils went 5-2 in the dual-meet format, beating Pinedale in the semifinals 46-27, but falling to Roosevelt 45-31 in the finals. Brady Roberts (175 pounds), Kyson Hamilton (144 pounds) and Jaxon Haider (150 pounds) finished a perfect 7-0.

Seven members of the Evanston High School Classics dance team – fresh off of their second-place finish in Hip-Hop at the Bountiful Invitational in Utah over the weekend – returned home to the news that they were named to the 2023-24 All-State Team by the WHSAA.

The Evanston High School boys’ swimming and diving team hosted their home invitational over the weekend, and it was a weekend the team won’t soon forget. The Red Devils claimed the overall team title, winning eight of the 12 events to finish with 336 points. Rock Springs was second with 279 points, followed by Green River (243), Rawlins (163) and Lyman (146).

The Evanston High School boys’ basketball team added to its win column over the weekend at the Flaming Gorge Classic, posting a 2-1 record to improve to 3-3 on the season. The Red Devils opened play Thursday with a 49-20 win over Farson-Eden, but came back to earth Friday against Thunder Basin, losing 48-28. Evanston closed out the tournament Saturday on a winning note, cruising past Pinedale 59-44.

The Evanston High School wrestling team traveled to Utah for its second meet of the season, finishing fourth as a team at the Viewmont Invitational, in Bountiful. Eight Red Devils reached the podium in the 21-team event, led by senior Brady Roberts – winner of the 175-pound championship – while the JV squad placed sixth as a team overall, reaffirming that the future is indeed bright for EHS wrestling.

The Evanston High School girls’ basketball team opened its 2023-24 campaign on the road at the Oil City Tip-Off Tournament in Casper last weekend, posting an 0-3 record against some strong competition. The Lady Devils (0-3) opened the tournament Thursday with a 59-40 loss to Natrona County. Evanston then played No. 4-ranked Laramie Friday, falling 56-21. The Lady Devils closed out the tournament Saturday against Cheyenne South, falling 47-26 in a game they led by eight points at the half.

The Evanston High School boys’ basketball team opened the 2023-24 season against some tough competition, posting a 1-2 record at the Oil City Tip-Off Tournament in Casper last weekend. The Red Devils opened the tourney Thursday against Natrona County, falling 51-43. Evanston followed that with a 64-44 loss to preseason No. 2 Laramie Friday, but bounced back Saturday with a 66-47 win over Cheyenne South to close out the tournament.

After a revolving door of head coaches the last three seasons, the Evanston High School girls’ basketball team is hoping it found some stability and consistency in new head coach Roy Barker, as the 2023-24 season tips off this weekend. The Lady Devils will be heading to Casper to open the season, and while Barker’s team skews young — there’s just two seniors and one junior on the roster this season — there are enough talented sophomores and freshmen coming up that the future looks bright. Out of 28 girls that tried out this season, 24 are underclassmen, so there is definitely a lot of room for growth.

Looking to rebound from a 7-17 season a year ago, the Evanston High School boys’ basketball is loaded from top to bottom with players who have dedicated themselves to getting the Red Devils back to the 4A State Tournament. “I’ve been pretty happy with the way practices have been going,” said EHS head coach Rob Watsabaugh. “We’ve been going in the morning and the afternoon, and the first three days, we were playing really hard; the energy and the effort level was there. We wanted to pick up at the level we were playing at the end of the year last year, and I think we’ve done a pretty good job of that so far in practice.”

For the second straight week, the Wyoming Cowboys enjoyed a fast start that led to their eighth overall win of the season and their fifth Mountain West Conference victory of the year as the Cowboys secured a 42-6 road win over the Nevada Wolf Pack. Wyoming finished the regular season 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain West. The Cowboys will now await a bowl invitation for the sixth time in the past eight seasons and the third consecutive season. Wyoming has never gone bowling in three successive seasons.

Coach of the Year: Sean Christensen The Evanston Youth Athletics Board is proud to announce that Sean Christensen has been named coach of the year. Sean has been coaching youth sports for two years and has coached baseball, T-ball and tackle football.

The 3A West All-Conference team was announced over the weekend, and a deep run through the 3A State Playoffs by Evanston High School football resulted in the largest number of Red Devils honored with postseason recognition in years.

Making a hole in one is a feat most amateur golfers can only dream of accomplishing. As it turns out, hitting a small, white ball into a hole the size of your fist is no easy task. Some of the greatest golfers in the world will never make an ace in their lifetime. Yet during one golf season, Evanston resident and math teacher Michelle Biddulph can claim making not one but two hole-in-one shots. As a statistics teacher at the high school, Biddulph was interested in the odds of a hole-in-one.

The Evanston High School volleyball team gathered to celebrate the 2023 season last week, handing out team awards, as well as honoring junior Jaylie Critchfield and freshman Kyan Lawlar, both of whom were named to the 4A West All-Conference Second Team.

The rollercoaster ride that was the 2023 season for the Evanston High School football team came to an end Friday night at Cody, as turnovers, bad breaks and big plays on the part of the home team combined for a 52-14 loss in the 3A State Semifinals.

Led by a State Championship in diving by sophomore Rachel Johnson and a third-place in the same event by senior Allyssa Sepos, the Evanston High School girls’ swimming and diving team competed well at last weekend’s 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships in Gillette, placing eighth as a team.

Usually, where you find one, you’ll find ‘em all. You’ll hear that from a coach or two, when they describe the bond that exists — on the field, and off — between the Evanston Red Devils’ senior core of linebackers: Kai Barker, Cohen Morrow, Brady Roberts and Cole Robinette. If one makes a play, the other three are there, slapping him on the back, hyping him up.
