Virginia “Virgie” Louise Carter, aged 63, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 14, 1960, in Evanston, to the late Thomas Ernest Gerrard and Virginia Elsie Sanchez Gerrard.

Virgie was a remarkable wife, mother, sister and friend. In the face of adversity, she displayed incredible strength and resilience, taking on the responsibility of raising her siblings after the untimely loss of her parents during high school. Virgie’s commitment to family was unwavering, often working three jobs to provide and maintain a happy home.

A true hippie spirit, Virgie was known for her love of making and wearing tie-dye shirts. Her heart, as expansive as Texas itself, made her home the welcoming center of her world, embracing an open-door policy that filled her space with laughter and love.

Sundays were a special time for gathering, enjoying delicious homemade meals, and creating lasting memories.

Virgie’s culinary talents were renowned, especially for her zucchini bread and famous tortillas, all crafted with love. Her home became a hub for family life, hosting countless holiday celebrations, birthdays and spontaneous moments of togetherness.

Virgie shared a deep bond with her late husband of 37 years, creating a home where love and shared experiences flourished, from tending a garden to savoring the fruits of their labor.

Throughout her life, Virgie held various positions, including work as a dispatcher at Halliburton, dedicated service at the Wyoming State Hospital and, until her retirement, employment at the Wyoming Port of Entry.

Fiercely protective and independent, Virgie approached life with determination and a strong will. Her infectious smile illuminated every room, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.

Fondly referred to as “Nana” by her beloved family, Virgie’s legacy is beautifully captured in the words of Matthew 25:23: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.”

Virgie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Franklin “Kirby” Carter; her parents; her brother, Anthony Martinez; and her brother, Andrew Gerrard.

She is survived by her cherished son, Andrew Carter and his significant other, Kelsey Harding; sister, Mona Barnes; brother, Benji Gerrard; brother, Tommy Gerrard and his wife, Wendy; along with numerous other loving family members and friends.

In honoring Virgie’s memory, let us celebrate a life well-lived, a spirit that touched many, and a legacy of love that will endure in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
