Vernocia Evelyn Shupe passed away on Sunday, May 7, at Sweetwater Memorial Hospital, a recent tenant of a Green River nursing home.

Vernocia was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Sheridan County, Nebraska, to Leland and Josephine Dober Dotson.

Vernocia married Duane A. Shupe on June 4, 1949, in Hay Springs, Nebraska. 

She lived in Yuma, Arizona, when Duane’s Army Reserve unit was activated for the Korean War. They mainly resided in Hay Springs, but lived for a few years in Chadron, Nebraska, prior to moving to Evanston in 1960. 

Vernocia was employed by JC Penney for 32 years, retiring in 1992. She enjoyed bridge club, U.P. Old Timers Club, trips to Wendover, shopping for antiques, summer at Bear Lake and Uinta Mountain picnics. Vernocia required no encouragement to dress up in goofy costumes for Evanston Crazy Days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Darold and Leo Dotson; sister, Phillis Fitzgerald; and her husband, Duane, in 2015.

Vernocia is survived by son, Douglas Shupe, his wife Judith and their children, Rachael and Justin Shupe, of Sydney, Australia; son, Kim Shupe, his wife Lucy and their children, Kelly Hiel (Rodney); grandchildren, Eric and Emily Heil, of Pocatello, Idaho; Erin (Carmen) Phoenix; grandchildren, Ian, Jeffery, Caden, Zach and Megan; Kimberly Schuman (Ryan); grandchildren, Haley, Alan and Patrick of Cheyenne; Katherine Graham (Blair); grandchild, William, of Belair, Maryland; her beloved sister, Dorothy (Wayne) Munson, of Reliance, South Dakota.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at Crandall Funeral Home, in Evanston. Interment will follow at the Evanston City Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to service.
