Shawna Leila (Hughes) Pecenka, age 62, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Shawna was born in Evanston, where she spent most of her childhood years, to Ed and Elma Hughes, on July 10, 1961. She later married Jim Pecenka, of Evanston, on June 4, 1993, and they spent the next 30 years together.
Shawna was accomplished in horsemanship and had a special gift in understanding animals. She worked as a veterinary technician and preferred spending her time in the company of animals. Shawna had a great love of music and a passion for the color purple.
Shawna is preceded in death by her father, Ed Hughes; mother, Elma Dockstader; brothers, Eddie Hughes, Sean Hughes and Louis Elizando; and many beloved critters.
Shawna is survived by her husband, James Pecenka; her daughter, TayaLeila; and her two brothers, Larry Scott Wertz and Shane K. Hughes.
A celebration of life potluck luncheon will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with the potluck beginning at noon, at the Evanston Youth Club, 606 6th Street, Evanston. Join us in sharing a meal and stories in Shawna’s honor. Please bring a side dish or dessert.
