Medley relays sweep; Barker, Conrad win events

The Evanston High School track and field teams were back in Utah last weekend for the Taylorsville Invitational, and once again, both teams turned in strong performances, with the Red Devils placing third as a team, and the Lady Devils placing fourth.

“The Taylorsville meet went really well — we got some more kids qualified, and some relays as well,” said EHS head coach Roy Barker. “It was a good meet for us.”

Kai Barker was the Red Devils’ top individual finisher, winning the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 2 inches; he also finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.79) and 11th in the 300 hurdles (43.71). Talia Conrad was the top finisher for the Lady Devils, winning the 400 meters in a time of 1:00.59 and placing fourth in the 200 meters, posting a state-qualifying time of 26.62. Conrad also ran a leg in the 4x100 relay — along with teammates Brenna Fackrell, Coaley Clifton and Kiara Worthing — that took first, with a time of 51.16.

“Talia is looking really strong at this point,” Barker said.

The EHS track and field teams were forced to cancel their home meet on Tuesday, but were finally able to get outside and practice on their home track Wednesday afternoon for the first time this season. This weekend, the teams will head to Logan, Utah, for the Grizzly Invitational.

“We appreciate [Activities Specialist] Boyd Child’s efforts to get the track cleaned off for us,” Barker said. “We were able to practice on it yesterday [Wednesday], so things will start picking up for us now. We’re looking forward to going to Logan this weekend — we took third there last year, combined men’s and women’s scores, brought a trophy home — and I anticipate the same, honestly. The kids are performing well.”

Red Devils

The Red Devils finished third overall in the 30-team field, and continue to hold their own against the bigger Utah schools.

“It was spring break, so we were still missing a few kids here and there,” Barker said. “But we had the bulk of our varsity kids, and the boys competed well.”

Gabe Hutchinson continued to perform well in sprints, turning in third-place finishes in both the 200 (22.14) and 400 (50.50) meters.

“Gabe broke his school record in the 200 meters, and he also ran a state-qualifying time in the 400 meters,” Barker said.

Other placers included Cameron Hiatt in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12 feet, 9 inches to finish fourth. Juan Navarro placed eighth in the 400 meters in a time of 52.43, while Conner Olson placed eighth in the discus, with a throw of 122 feet, 11 inches.

Relays continue to be a strong point for the Red Devils, with the sprint medley relay team of Ayden Hartzel, Ethan Moberley, Zeke Walton and Isaiah Lange finishing in the top spot with a time of 3:48.18. The 4x400 relay team of Gustavo Cervantes, Gabe Hutchinson, Joey Leon and Juan Navarro placed second, with a time of 3:31.56, while the 4x100 team of Cervantes, Hutchinson, Zeke Walton and Navarro finished third, with a time of 43.59.

“The 4x100 team’s time was the third best all-time in Evanston,” Barker said. “They’re shooting for that school record this year, so they’re gearing up for that.”

The 4x800 team of Paul Baxter, Aidan Conrad, Jamar McDowell and Cameron Hiatt finished eighth, with a time of 8:35.04.

Other notable performances on the boys’ side included Zeke Walton in the 400 meters (10th, 52.74), Kenyen Muir in the shot put (11th, 39 feet, 6 inches), Landon Palmer in the pole vault (16th, 10 feet, 3 inches), Paul Baxter in the 1600 meters (33rd, 4:51.60), Isaiah Lange in the 3200 meters (43rd, 11:05.42) and Mason Young in the 800 meters (51st, 2:21.34).

Lady Devils

On the girls’ side, relays were also the name of the game, as the sprint medley team of Coaley Clifton, Brenna Fackrell, Aubrey Horrocks and Eliza Day made it a team sweep, winning the event in a time of 4:43.79. The Lady Devils also won the 4x100 relay, as the team of Brenna Fackrell, Coaley Clifton, Kiara Worthing and Talia Conrad posted a time of 51.16 to claim the top spot.

In individual events, Aubrey Horrocks placed fifth in the 800 meters, posting a time of 2:30.48, while Kiara Worthing also posted a fifth-place finish in the long jump, with a distance of 16 feet, 3.75 inches. Jessica McMurtrey placed seventh in the shot put, with a toss of 31 feet. 3.5 inches, while Emma Lonsway rounded out the Lady Devils placers with a seventh-place finish in the 100 hurdles, posting a time of 17.44.
