Capener sets school record in 800; teams 12th overall

The Evanston High School track and field teams were back in Utah over the weekend competing at the PACS BYU Invitational in Provo, turning in solid performances amongst a stacked field of 132 teams and over 3,000 athletes from around the region.

The Red Devils and Lady Devils finished a combined 12th overall, placing in six events and ending the day with handful of personal bests — including a new school record — and several more state qualifying marks.

“It went really well — we had a lot of good performances,” said EHS head coach Roy Barker. “Ended up with a few more state qualifiers. It was a nice meet for us.”

For the Lady Devils, distance runner Jocelyn Capener set a new school standard in the 800 meters, posting a time of 2:15.69, and finishing 10th in a crowded field.

“Jocelyn is having a great season, we’re really proud of her,” Barker said.

Capener also ran a leg in the sprint medley relay – along with teammates Cassie Barker, Emma Lonsway and Talia Conrad — placing second in a time of 4:28.56. Other notable performances on the girls’ side included Talia Conrad in the 100 meters (10th, 12.50); Emma Lonsway in the pole vault (14th, 9’6”) and the 300 hurdles (28th, 46.85) and Cassie Barker in the high jump (19th, 5’1”).

The 4x100 relay team of Emma Lonsway, Cassie Barker, Braelynn Morrison and Talia Conrad finished 11th (50.37), while the 4x800 team of Jasmine Tapia, Liesl Botts, Marley Renelle and  Hallie Prete finished 22nd (10:36.09).

“The girls are ready to rock and roll headed into Regionals and State,” Barker said. “They’re pretty healthy, and some of the younger girls are really improving their marks. Our distance runners are right where we want them to be. We’d like to see some better marks in our field events, possibly. Emma Lonsway prequalified in the pole vault, which was good to see. I think the girls are setting themselves up for a good Regional meet, individually, and as a team.”

On the boys’ side, Kai Barker finished second overall in the high jump, clearing a height of 6 feet, 6 inches; the recent Weber State commit also ran legs in the first-place sprint medley relay — along with Ayden Hartzell, Gabe Hutchinson and Aidan Conrad – (1st, 3:40.16), as well as the 4x100 relay — with Jayden Rieker, Ayden Hartzell and Gabe Hutchinson — (18th, 43.61).

Still gunning for the school record, the 4x800 team of Aidan Conrad, Paul Baxter, Gideon Stahl and Jamar McDowell placed seventh, with a time of 8:07.60, missing the record by .4 of a second.

Also placing for the Red Devils was Cameron Hiatt who cleared 13 feet in the pole vault to finish in sixth place; Ayden Hartzell reached the podium in the 400 meters, placing eighth, with a time of 48.96.

“To get points out of those three guys was pretty amazing, with the level of competition that was at that meet,” Barker said. “We had a freshman — Jayden Rieker — who prequalified in the 200 meter dash, so there are some really good things going on right now with the boys, as well. A lot of them are at the point where they’re setting season bests, and if they’re not, they’re being very consistent, so it’s good stuff.”

Other notable performances included Gabe Hutchinson in the 400 meters (19th, 49.99); Gideon Stahl in the 800 meters (49th, 1:58.86); Luca Flores in the shot put (34th, 45’4.25”); Conner Olsen in the discus (59th, 123’4”) and Trayten Weidrich (12th, 12’6”), Jay Hill (18th, 11’6”) and Brayden Wallace (28th, 11’) in the pole vault.

With the regular season now in the books, the EHS track and field teams will now turn their attention to the 4A West Regional Meet, scheduled to begin Friday in Rock Springs.

“You know it will be windy,” Barker said. “But hopefully, it’s not cold. Hopefully we can get one of those nice days, and everyone will perform well.”
