EVANSTON — The Evanston Legion A baseball team closed out the home portion of its schedule last week, posting a 3-1 record in its final four games at Ross Kesterson Field.
The week started Wednesday with a day/night doubleheader against conference rival Green River, who will host the West District A Tournament this week. After winning the first game of the twin bill in exciting fashion 9-8, the Outlaws (20-18, 11-1) dropped the nightcap 13-3.
Saturday was Senior Recognition Day for the Outlaws, as the team honored Ryder Wilson, Gavin Oliver and Tony Natoli for their contributions to the program over the years.
The Boys of Post 41 swept a doubleheader from Saratoga, winning Game 1 by a score of 23-4; they followed that with a 25-1 win in Game 2.
The Outlaws will open play Friday at the West District A Tournament in Green River.
Outlaws 9, Green River 8
Thanks to some late-inning heroics at the plate by Jacson Osborne, the Outlaws rallied from an 8-7 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to beat Green River 9-8 in Game 1 of a twin bill.
With one out, and runners Gavin Oliver on second, and Ryder Wilson on third, Osborne smacked a single to center field, scoring Wilson and Oliver, and giving the Outlaws a walk-off win.
Oliver picked up the win on the mound for the home team, allowing five runs on two hits (none earned), and striking out six. Walker Wilson picked up the save.
Both pitchers also helped their own causes at the plate, with Oliver going 2-for-3, with a home run and 4 RBIs; Walker Wilson also went 2-for-3, with 3 runs scored.
Ryder Wilson, Braxton Bauer, Brecken Rich and Tyson Bateman each collected a hit, with Ryder Wilson and Bauer each smacking a double; Bauer also finished with a pair of RBIs.
Green River 13,
Outlaws 3
A disastrous third inning proved to be the Outlaws’ undoing in Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader, as Green River earned a split with a 13-3 win.
The Knights held a 2-1 lead after two innings, but broke the game in the top of the third, plating 11 runs. Evanston scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth, but that was as close as the home team would get in the 13-3 loss.
Brecken Rich was saddled with the loss on the bump for the Outlaws, giving up six runs on four hits in just over two innings of work. Jaden Windley and Jaxon Corbett came on in relief, with Windley giving up seven runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning; Corbett pitched two innings of hitless ball, striking out three, Braxton Bauer and Jacson Osborne each collected a pair of hits; Gavin Oliver had a hit and an RBI.
Outlaws 23,
Saratoga 4
Powered by 16 hits — including a monster game by Braxton Bauer, and home runs by both Bauer and Jacson Osborne — the Outlaws cruised to a 23-4 win over visiting Saratoga in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Bauer proved to be a one-man wrecking crew against Saratoga, hitting a grand slam and a pair of RBI doubles to finish with 6 RBIs on the day.
Ryder Wilson (3-for-3, RBI, 4 runs scored), Walker Wilson (3-for-4, double, 5 RBIs), Gavin Oliver (3-for-3, double, 2 RBIs) and Jacson Osborne (3-for-3, HR, 5 RBIs) also had multi-hit games for the Outlaws. Josh Moio doubled for his one hit of the game; he also knocked in a pair of runs and scored twice.
