I’m heartbroken hearing the news of 1063 and her cubs — as are so many others! I was in the Tetons the Saturday before the cubs were found dead. I was able to watch the family of four — what a beautiful thing to see.
Momma was aware and alert of the cubs, as were the cubs aware of her. When she got a little ahead of them, she would stop and look back, and they would scurry toward her.
I was saddened and in shock when I witnessed the park workers haze this family! It was totally unnecessary! You could see 1063 wanted to cross the road. She and the cubs would get up to the road, and a government car would pull right in front of them with the horn blaring! I have video of it. It was so, so sad!
Mom was confused, as were the cubs. She went back down to the meadow but returned up to the road after 20 minutes or so and, again the car pulled up and was honking! That mom wanted to cross; why would they not let her?!
She is aware of what’s in the area. Was she trying to get away from the boar, taking her cubs the opposite direction. She has instincts, and the humans working totally interfered with those! I was sickened watching these people who are supposed to keep the bears safe act like this!
I have no doubt the hazing right at dark is what led the cubs to their death. I’m furious about what has been done. Will the workers be talked to? Interviewed? Disciplined for their horrible actions? How are these animals supposed to move to safety when park rangers interfere?!
There has to be better training and a better way to prevent these things happening!
