Hundreds gathered in Evanston's Historic Depot Square to view the eclipse and learn more about the event. The eclipse reached 94 percent totality in Evanston over the course of a couple of hours, sparking fascination and creating a midday "twilight zone" as the noonday sun was cast in shadow. Among other light effects caused by the eclipse, leaves cast crescent-shaped shadows that changed in curvature.
