It was a rough weekend at Red Devils Gymnasium for the Evanston High School boys’ basketball team, as they were swept by the visiting Casper teams.

The weekend began Friday with a 52-36 loss, and concluded Saturday afternoon with a 53-52 heartbreaker to Natrona County, in a game that came down to the final seconds.

The Red Devils look to get back on track this weekend on the road at Rock Springs.

Kelly Walsh 52,

Red Devils 36

The Red Devils opened the weekend Friday against Kelly Walsh, in a game that went back-and-forth for much of the first half.

The Trojans held a slim 11-10 lead after one quarter, and despite a run in the second, still led by just two at the break, 26-24.

The Red Devils struggled to get going in the third, allowing the Trojans to add to their lead. Trailing 38-32 headed into the final frame, Evanston’s shooting went cold, while the Trojans went on a 14-4 run to close out the game, holding on for the 52-36 win.

Turnovers were a factor, as the Red Devils gave up the ball 21 times, compared to just 12 for Kelly Walsh.

Jordan Mendez paced the Red Devils with 12 points, followed by Clayton Cook with nine points and Jay Hill with five points. Brenner Lym and Ryker Lind finished with four points and three points, respectively, while Raife Wiedrich hit a late bucket for two points. Brooks Searle hit a free throw to close out the scoring.

Lind and Clayton Cook each grabbed six rebounds to lead the team, while Lym dished off four assists.

Natrona 53,

Red Devils 52

Saturday’s contest against the Mustangs was truly a back-and-forth affair, with both teams winning two quarters.

Natrona jumped out to an early 13-9 lead in the first, though the Red Devils — without guard Jordan Mendez — stormed back in the second to take a 26-22 lead at the break.

The Mustangs began the second half much like they did the first, outscoring their hosts 22-14 to take a 44-40 lead in the fourth quarter. The Red Devils won the quarter 12-9, but couldn’t make up the four-point difference, losing by a point, 53-52.

Ryker Lind led the charge for the Red Devils with 12 points, followed by 11 points from Brooks Searle, who hit three shots from behind the arc. Ryker Pace finished with nine points – to go along with eight rebounds – while Brenner Lym and Clayton Cook chipped in eight points and seven points, respectively. Jay Hill rounded out the scoring with five points.
