Red Devils set new school standards in several events

The Evanston High School track and field teams were back in Utah over the weekend competing at the PACS BYU Invitational in Provo, turning in solid performances amongst a stacked field of 132 teams and over 3,400 athletes from around the region.

The Red Devils and Lady Devils finished a combined 40th overall, placing in three events and ending the day with a handful of personal bests — including a new school record — and several more state qualifying marks.

“It went really well,” said EHS head coach Roy Barker. “The kids performed well, we had good weather — it’s amazing what they can do when it’s nice outside. That event has so many teams, 3,400 kids. It’s a really fun event. Even though the placings may not be great because of how competitive it is, with our individual kids and their performances, we had some school records broken, some great kids getting up on the Top 10 list, pre-qualifying for state.”

One record broken was the boys 4x100 relay, with the team of Timber Fitch, Jayden Rieker, Brayden Wallace and Ayden Hartzell. The team broke the previous school record at Tuesday’s Schuler Invitational in Evanston with a time of 42.95, a record that had stood since 1992. Believing they could go faster, the four then turned around and broke it again Saturday at the BYU Invite, with a time of 42.81, good enough for 12th place.

The 4x100 wasn’t the only relay that fell on Saturday. The 4x400 team of Jayden Rieker, Paul Baxter, Aidan Conrad and Ayden Hartzell also set a new EHS standard, with a time of 3:21.26; the team also medaled, placing sixth overall.

Hartzell continued to break school records in individual events, as well, breaking his own records in both the 200 meters (8th, 21.51) and 400 meters (3rd, 47.63), and making the podium in both.

On the girls’ side, Hallie Prete prequalified for state in the 800 meters (2:21.73) and the 1600 meters (5:22.27). Emma Lonsway ran a 47.12 in the 300 hurdles, and placed ninth in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, 6 inches.

“I thought Emma Lonsway ran well in the 300 hurdles, she’s been running really consistent,” Barker said. “Hallie Prete did extremely well in the distance races, and our girls’ throwers have been solid and consistent, as well. It was a good day for the girls.”

For the boys, Timber Fitch prequalified for state in the 300 hurdles, posting a time of 40.98.

“Timber ran a great time in the 300 hurdles, just a great race for him,” Barker said. “Our distance runners did outstanding — all of them ran seasonal bests. It was fun.”

Carter Olsen’s throw of 47 feet, 1.5 inches was a season best, and Barker said he likes where his throwers are at as the regular season winds down.

“They’re throwing with a lot of consistency, and improving each week,” he said.
