The Evanston Outlaws Legion A baseball team had a productive opening weekend to the 2025 season, sweeping the visiting Laramie Rangers 3-0 at Field 1 of the Overthrust Complex, while Ross Kesterson Field is getting a makeover.
The Outlaws got the weekend started with a bang Saturday, winning the first game of a doubleheader 11-1. Laramie kept it close in game two, as the home team had to battle back from a 3-0 deficit to win 7-6.
Sunday’s game was a wild one, with the Rangers taking an early lead, Evanston storming back in the middle innings, Laramie retaking the lead once more, only for the Outlaws to put the Rangers away for good late to win 12-10.
The Outlaws were on the road Tuesday at Rock Springs, then will travel to Laramie the weekend of May 3 for a three-game series with the Rangers.
Outlaws 11, Laramie 1
The Outlaws opened the season Saturday afternoon in the first game of a twin bill against Laramie, with the game ending in the fifth inning by virtue of the 10-run rule, 11-1.
Tied 1-1 after three innings, the Outlaws plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth and seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early.
Gavin Oliver picked up his first win of the season, giving up just one run on three hits and striking out six over four innings of work. Ryder Wilson pitched an inning of no-hit ball in relief, striking out one.
Evanston had nine hits in the contest, led by a two-hit, two-RBI performance from Tyson Bateman. Jacson Osborne also had two hits — including a triple — and an RBI, while Brecken Rich and Ryder Wilson each doubled for his only hit of the game; Wilson also had two RBIs. Oliver, Jaden Windley and Damian Kamen each finished with a hit apiece; Kaman and Oliver each had two RBIs.
Outlaws 7, Laramie 6
In game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Outlaws spotted Laramie a 3-0 lead that lasted until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Evanston plated a pair of runs to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Outlaws took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to make it 7-3; Laramie scored three more runs in the top of the seventh, but that’s as close as they would get, as Evanston held on for the 7-6 win.
Brackin Lail got the start for the Outlaws, allowing three runs on one hit (zero earned), and striking out four over three innings. Jaxon Corbett picked up the win in relief, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out three over three and one-third innings. Damian Kaman also pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief for the Outlaws, striking out one.
The Outlaws finished with seven hits, led by Gavin Oliver, who went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Ben Lail also had two hits and an RBI in the contest, while Brackin Lail, Brecken Rich and Ryder Wilson had a hit apiece.
Outlaws 12, Laramie 10
The Outlaws closed out the three-game series against Laramie Sunday with a 12-10 barnburner that featured a little bit of everything, from home runs to thrilling comebacks and everything in between.
For the second game in a row, the Rangers jumped out to an early lead, plating a pair of runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. That lasted until the bottom of the third, when the Outlaws tied the score at 2-2. Then, with two outs, Damian Kaman — the ninth batter in the lineup, and perhaps still a little torqued at being hit by a pitch in his first at bat — launched a 3-run shot over the left field fence to give the Outlaws a 5-2 lead.
Evanston scored a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth; the Rangers also scored two runs in the fifth to make it 7-4. Laramie scored four more runs in the top of the sixth to re-take the lead 8-7, though the Outlaws answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth — including a 2-run triple off the bat of Kaman — to take the lead for good at 12-8.
Kaman came in to pitch relief in the top of the seventh. The Rangers scored twice more to make it 12-10, but the Outlaws were able to slam the door, with Kaman striking out the final batter with the bases loaded to end the game.
Ryder Wilson started for the Outlaws on the bump, giving up two runs on four hits (zero earned) and striking out six over three innings of work. Brecken Rich picked up the win in relief, allowing six runs on three hits and striking out three; Kaman got the save, allowing two earned runs on four hits, with one strikeout.
Laman was a one-man wrecking crew at the plate, going 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs, including a home run and a triple. Gavin Oliver also had three hits in the contest, including a double, while Jacson Osborne, Jaden Windley and Brecken Rich had two hits apiece; Osborne had two RBIs, Rich and Windley finished with one. Wilson, Ben Lail and Tyson Bateman rounded out the hitting with one apiece.
