EVANSTON — An Evanston man was bound over to District Court on Friday, May 2, facing two felony counts of strangulation of a household member and aggravated assault and battery against a former girlfriend. He’s also been charged with two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and communicating threats of bodily harm.

Harry Flores, 20, had been living with the woman, her mother and her young child for six months during the time of the accusations. Upon moving in with the family, Flores allegedly became physically violent by slapping her in the face and punching her in the back of the head “so hard it left large lumps on the back of her head,” according to a court affidavit filed in late April.

“Flores then got to the point he would get so upset he began ‘choking’ her,” the document states. The woman told law enforcement that Flores had become increasingly jealous, repeatedly accusing her of infidelity, which escalated to choking her multiple times, each time more severely than the last.

“While strangling her [he] has made comments like ‘I’ll [expletive] kill you’ and ‘if I can’t have you no one can,’” the affidavit reports.

At one point, Flores allegedly pressed a knife against her throat, “chased her with a screwdriver and made verbal threats of stabbing her multiple times.” During another alleged confrontation in his vehicle, the woman fled into a nearby business.

She presented photo-documented injuries, consisting of red marks and bruises, to the police. An incident police say was captured by an in-home security camera compelled the woman’s mother to evict Flores from the residence. After he left the home, he continued to contact and terrorize her, “making threats of killing her and kidnapping her young daughter,” according to charging documents.

She told police that she didn’t initially come forward because Flores had previously identified himself as part of a Mexican cartel, insinuating what would happen to her if she left him.

The affidavit also transcribes numerous alleged text messages between the woman and Flores during a month-long period from late February to late March. In addition to often accusing her of infidelity and calling her an array of obscene and degrading names, Flores also texted “Imma [sic] beat the [expletive] out of you,” according to investigators.

The woman said that, when she confronted Flores via text about him trying to stab her with a screwdriver in front of her young child, Flores responded that the incident occurred because “U [sic] cheating on me.”

“Why do you hit me so much ... and threaten to kill me,” she inquired of Flores, the affidavit states. “U [sic] don’t love me enough to be loyal to me,” replied Flores. “I just don’t want you to hit me again,” the woman responded.

“You tried to stab me before ... you told me the only way out is death,” another alleged text from the woman to Flores reads.

Flores is currently awaiting arraignment in District Court. If convicted of all current charges, he faces up to 21 and a half years in prison and/or $21,750 in fines.
