Horizon students help out at local raceway, get treated to exhibition

EVANSTON — Hypoxia Dragway held its third annual Horizon High School Day on Tuesday, May 27. The high schoolers came to the track and performed community service. They pulled weeds, painted the gate and cleaned up the sand trap.

Afterward, Hypoxia Dragway put on a little exhibition for them. Special guests Mayor Kent Williams and some of his family, along with Uinta County GIS Coordinator Gary Welling, were at the exhibition.

As part of the exhibition, Mathew Leonard from Nitro Rat Racing came out with his AA fuel-altered car named Nitro Rat. Mayor Williams got the unique experience of climbing into Nitro Rat while Mathew and the Hypoxia team started up the car.

More exhibition racing followed. Aaron Hatch from Tooele, Utah, and Ken Smith from Evanston were asked to race their cars, along with Kay Dickey, Pete Lowrey, Chris Lowrey, Mardi Woodward, Sonja Eves and Chuck Rees from Hypoxia.

Suzette Morrill, decided to try racing, and that led to principal Bren Payne and a teacher racing each other several times. Racing continued until 2 p.m.

Officials said it was a great day for Horizon High School, community leaders and Hypoxia Dragway.

Hypoxia would like to thank Mathew Leonard, Aaron Hatch, Ken Smith, the Hypoxia volunteers, Mayor Williams and his family, Gary Welling, Principal Payne, and — most importantly — Horizon High School students for coming out to do community service.
