Local residents have organized the Half Cent for Uinta County working group to educate voters about the ½ cent sales tax for economic development that will appear on the Aug. 20 primary ballot. If voters approve the tax (which excludes groceries), Uinta County will begin collecting revenue in 2025 and distribute it among, Lyman, Bear River, Mountain View, Evanston and the county based on population.
“This is an important investment tool for our community,” said Evanston Community Development Director Rocco O’Neill, who presented the ballot measure to the county, city, and towns earlier this year. “This 1/2 cent will help provide a funding source for economic development across Uinta County. These funds will help us continue to support local businesses and entrepreneurs, help fund infrastructure improvement projects that make our communities ‘business ready,’ and help with workforce training and education as new industries come to southwest Wyoming.”
A half cent tax allows communities to self-fund their economic development efforts.
“As a conservative community, we understand it is important to be fiscally responsible with taxpayer money; half cent sales tax ultimately helps grow and expand the local economy through job creation from business attraction and retention programs, incentivizing private development, expanding workforce training programs, and much more.”
