Evanston schools hold Veterans Day programs

EVANSTON — The North Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) honored local veterans on Friday, Nov. 10, with a complimentary breakfast, sponsored by Dominion Energy, and a moving 45-minute musical program presented by fifth-graders and their music teacher, Amanda Linford.

Veterans were treated to biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit, juices and coffee, as well as the company of student council members.

“This is a program that so many look forward to each year,” PTO president Franki Mair said. “Seeing those who served come together to tell stories and share emotions — it’s very humbling. Being able to show those in our community that we love and appreciate what they have done for us is very rewarding. I hope this is a tradition that can carry on for many years.”

The program consisted of several songs, many of which elicited teary eyes, particularly the song “On Veterans Day.” Each fifth-grader was allowed a spoken-word contribution, and several performed solos. Veterans were invited to stand to represent their chosen branch during the “Armed Forces Medley.”

Handbells were used during “Remember to Remember,” and the closing act selection, “The Lights of Freedom,” included a darkened auditorium and a creative use of flashlights.

Soldiers from the Wyoming National Guard performed the opening flag ceremony.

“We try to do this every year. I’ve been the recruiter here for a decade; every time I have my soldiers from Evanston here, I try to ensure they do that [present the colors]. I’m trying to pass the baton,” said SFC Shawn Todd, who was also awarded Veteran of the Year at a Davis Middle School ceremony.

The guardsmen also participated at Evanston High School in addition to the color presentations at North and Davis.

“It’s a presentation of what Veterans Day is,” Todd said. “I’m very proud of the soldiers out here in this community.”
