Taking full advantage of Utah’s spring-like weather, the Evanston High School track teams opened the 2024 outdoor season over the weekend, sending a pared-down contingent to Draper, Utah, for the Tony Glover Invitational.

With just 48 athletes making the trip, the Red Devils finished sixth in the 16-team field, while the Lady Devils finished eighth.

“It went well, we had some good performances,” said EHS head coach Roy Barker. “We didn’t take our full team because of prom, and coming right out of basketball season, but it was a good meet for us. It was good to see the sunshine, and actually see the track. It was a beautiful day.”

Evanston prequalified a handful of athletes for State, including Kai Barker, who won the 110 hurdles, with a time of 15.74; he also finished second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 6 inches.

Cameron Hiatt placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 10 inches, while Braeden Wallace followed in sixth, with a height of 10 feet, 6 inches. Thrower Luca Flores finished seventh in the discus, with a toss of 119 feet, 7.5 inches.

Other notable performances on the boys’ side included Jamison Williams in the 3200 meters (9th, 10:58.20), Jayden Rieker in the 200 meter dash (12th, 23.88), 15. Raife Weidrich in the long jump (15th, 17 feet, 11 inches) and Paul Baxter in the 1600 meter run (15th, 4:40.69).

On the girls’ side, Cassie Barker qualified in the high jump as well, placing second with a height of 5 feet, 1 inch. Emma Lonsway placed in all three of her events, placing fifth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, with times of 17.22 and 48.76, respectively; she also placed sixth in the pole vault (9 feet).

“Kai prequalified in the hurdles and the high jump, so that was good to see,” Barker said. “In our distance events, we had five kids under five minutes in the mile, so those are good performances. We had a freshman place in the discus, Luca Flores. There were some good things that happened.”

Thrower Alyssa Brown placed in both of her events, finishing third in the shot put (32 feet, 5.5 inches), and fifth in the discus (84 feet, 4 inches). Other notable performances included Braelynn Morrison in the 100 meter dash (12th, 13.97) and Lila Horton in the 400 meter dash (14th, 1:08.85).

“We didn’t take very many girls, but the ones that did go did very well,” coach Barker said. “We had some good performances. Emma Lonsway performed really well – she was really close to prequalifying in all three of her events. Cassie Barker prequalified in the high jump, and Alyssa Brown had a good day – she placed in both the shot put and discus. It was fun, it was a good day.”

The EHS track and field teams head back to Utah this week, this time with a full contingent of athletes ready to go.

“This week, we have a meet in Farmington, Utah,” Barker said. “We’re able to take the girls on Wednesday, and the boys on Thursday. The weather looks like it’s going to be beautiful, even better than Saturday. Since they separate the boys and the girls, the meet goes quick, and we’ll be able to take the whole team. We should be able to see almost the whole group for the first time this year.”
