The Evanston High School girls’ soccer team traveled to Afton Thursday afternoon, determined to prove their win against Star Valley earlier this season wasn’t a fluke.
The Lady Devils returned home Thursday evening having done exactly that, completing the season sweep of the Lady Braves for the first time in program history with a 1-0 win.
“Star Valley gave us a run for our money, that’s for sure,” said EHS head coach Karalyn Barton. “It was a great win. It was a different game than we had played previously against them — they were playing a high back line, so we couldn’t do what we had normally done, just because it was so congested in the midfield and in the back line. We tried to put some speed on top, but we got a lot of offside calls. We created a lot of scoring opportunities, but only one went in.”
The only score of the contest came with 24 seconds left in the first half, as Lady Devil freshman Cami Dennis brought the ball up the left side of the pitch, muscled her way through a handful of Star Valley defenders and let loose with a shot that found the back of the net for the score.
“Cami snuck one in there,” Barton said, laughing. “She battled through and got us the goal.”
The Lady Devils played tough defense for the remainder of the game, all the while continuing to create scoring opportunities, though shots just wouldn’t go in. On the other end of the pitch, keeper Adalee May earned a clean sheet with the win.
“Our defense did a great job, because it was high pressure back there with them transitioning so quickly,” Barton said. “And they didn’t have a lot of distance to travel. I mean, they transitioned quickly. Adalee stayed composed. We played the ball back a couple times, which was maybe a little bit scary. But I thought Adalee did a great job with that. Right. She came out in some high-stress situations, and got the ball; she’s really good at 1v1s. She’s not afraid to come out of the box and challenge. That’s actually her strength.”
Calling the win a “total team effort,” Barton said players like Evie Stahl, Zoe Barker, Sidney Liechty and Sierra Barnes are always hustling on defense.
“They work so hard on that back line,” Barton said. “And in the second half, we moved Dannon Kohler out to the wing, and she was able to give us some good looks on goal. Kessnie Johnstone, Kristen Ayala-Gomez also played well on the wing.”
Freshman Haven Hill has proven to be a player to watch at forward this season, according to Barton.
“Haven Hill — she’s really figuring out how to play as a forward, which can be a frustrating position,” Barton explained. “We only have one forward with the formation that we have, so sometimes that’s a hard job up there, chasing everything. I really feel like in the past few games, she’s figured that position out. She’s working really hard up there for us.”
The Lady Devils had a bit of a stumble Saturday against Jackson in an 11-0 loss, but will look to get back on track this weekend, with games against Kelly Walsh and Natrona County at Kay Fackrell Stadium.
