EVANSTON — The Red Devil and Lady Red Devil cross-country teams opened their season in Roy, Utah, competing in the annual “Royal Run” against competition from Utah-area schools.
In the boys’ varsity division, Evanston placed fourth behind Herriman, Farmington and Northridge, but ahead of Layton, Roy, Jordan and Taylorsville with a team score of 115. Scores are compiled by adding the top-five places in order of finish for each team.
A score of 15 would indicate a particular team placed all of their five scoring runners in the first five spots (1+2+3+4+5=15).
For comparison sake, Herriman ended with a 39, while Taylorsville tallied a 232.
Senior and returning all-state selection Weston Wiley led the way for Evanston, placing tenth in a field of 56 runners with a time of 16:33 for the three-mile course. Fellow returning all-state runner and junior Dawson Crofts placed sixteenth with a time of 16:54.
Lady Red Devil cross-country placed fourth as a team with a score of 89 for the opening meet for Evanston among a field of seven teams.
Layton was first with a score of 30, followed by Herriman and Farmington. Evanston was next, besting Roy, Northridge and Jordan, the last of which finished with a 119 team score.
Senior Reghan Worley placed fifth overall to lead Evanston in a field of 52 runners with a time of 19:45. Senior Breila Fuller and sophomore Heidi Barton also cracked the top 20 with Fuller finishing in fifteenth place with a time of 20:59 and Barton coming in in twentieth place, clocking a time of 21:17.
The boys’ junior varsity placed fourth in the field of eight while the girls’ J.V. team placed fourth among the four teams who qualified for a team score.
There were also boys’ and girls’ rookie three-mile divisions. The Evanston boys placed fourth, while the girls did not have enough runners to qualify for and post a team score.
The schedule shows the team will be in action on Friday, August 31, in Rawlins and on Saturday, Sept. 1, in Soda Springs, Idaho.
