EVANSTON — Sagebrush Theatre will return to the Strand this week for a production of “Murder on the Orient Express.”

The production, based on a novel by late murder mystery author Agatha Christie, follows detective Hercule Poirot as he “finds himself on the Orient Express with nine strangers and his best friend Bouc,” according to director Katie Heckert. Those aboard the train are from around the world with no apparent connection.

“On the first night, the train gets delayed and a murder occurs. Poirot must solve a murder and this mystery may break his moral code,” Heckert said.

The play has cost Sagebrush approximately $3,000 so far. Heckert said this low cost is due to the reuse of materials and cast members’ providing their own costumes. Not included in the cost is the rental of the Strand Theatre, which was donated by a member of the community.

Heckert said she is incredibly proud of the two casts participating in the production.

“These people have been incredibly dedicated and a joy to work with,” she said. “I am excited to present this show to the community.”

As Sagebrush’s coffers run dry, its future becomes more uncertain. The organization is “taking everything one show at a time,” according to Heckert.

“Our funds are heavily depleted and dependent on the success of each show,” she said.

“Wizard of Oz,” last spring’s production, kept the nonprofit afloat, and she hopes “Murder on the Orient Express” will manage to do the same.

Heckert thanked the community for their support, participation and contribution throughout the three decades of Sagebrush’s existence.

“It has always been a labor of love and it would not have meant anything without all of you,” she said.

“Murder on the Orient Express” will be at the Strand June 6-8, and June 12-15. Most shows will take place at 7 p.m., but there will be matinee performances at 2 p.m. on June 8 and June 15. June 8 will also have an evening showing.
