XC boys race to first place finish at conference, girls take second

EVANSTON — The Evanston boys’ cross-country team has fared well all season and last Friday’s 4A West Conference meet in Rock Springs was no exception. The Evanston runners placed first as a team with senior Weston Wiley taking individual first-place honors. 

The Evanston girls’ team had a very good showing, as well, with their second place finish as a team.

Four Red Devils and one Lady Red Devil placed in the top-10, earning all-conference awards. Weston Wiley won the boys’ race with a time of 16:41.55. Senior Dallin Cardon and junior Dawson Crofts placed fifth and sixth, respectively, separated by less than a second with times of 17:19.07 and 17:19.34. Bradshaw Haack rounded out the top-10 with a 17:46.94 time to earn all-conference honors, with Logan Hunt placing 11th with a 17:55.47, just outside the top-10 and an all-conference designation. 

Laramie and Rock Springs had two runners earn all-conference honors with one each from Natrona County and Green River comprising the top-10.

Evanston’s first place team score was 33, followed by Laramie with a 67. Rock Springs and Natrona County ended tied at 70, with Kelly Walsh one point better than Green River, 131 to 132, respectively.

Garrett Berger placed 23rd for the Red Devils with a 19:01.14 for the 5000 meter race and Latham Chandler finished in the 28th spot with a time of 19:22.94.

Lady Red Devil senior Breila Fuller claimed an all-conference designation with her time of 20:59.21, good for 10th place. Senior Reghan Worley was just on the outside looking in with her 11th place finish and a time of 21:07.31. Other Lady Red Devils who ran hard included Lilly Williams with a time of 21:22.48 good for 13th place; Katy Saxton in 15th place, with a time of 21:27.20; Quetzalli Penaloza who raced to a 16th place finish with a time of 21:33.55 and Rachel Haack with a time of 22:59.26, good for 26th place. 

Natrona County won the girls’ race with a team score of 35, followed by runner-up Evanston’s 64, Laramie’s 67 for third place, and Rock Springs and Kelly Walsh with scores of 75 and 109, respectively.

Team scores for the girls’ race at the 4A East Conference meet, held at the Cam-Plex Park in Gillette, were Cheyenne Central with a 43, followed by Sheridan with a 47, Thunder Basin with an 84, Campbell County with a 91, Cheyenne South with a 105 and Cheyenne East with a 135.

Boys’ team scores from the other side of the state show Sheridan in first place with a 34, followed by Cheyenne Central with a 42, Cheyenne East with an 83, Cheyenne South with a 122, Thunder Basin with a 121 and Campbell County with a 140.

Sheridan will host the 4A state meet this Saturday, Oct. 20.

Lady Red Devil and Red Devil cross-country coach Ryan Berger was named the 4A West Conference Coach of the Year.
