EVANSTON — The third-ranked and 3-0 Red Devil football team opens conference play tonight with the Powell Panthers invading Kay Fackrell Stadium for a scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff tonight in the Class 3A West Conference showdown. The Panthers, 1-2 on the season, were narrowly defeated in their first two games by Worland and Lander, but turned around last week and upset the previously third-ranked Bearcats in Douglas.
Powell and Evanston have faced one another seven times on the gridiron, dating back to 1957, with the Red Devils owning a 4-3 advantage in the series. Prior to last season’s 14-7 conference road win for the Red Devils, the two teams had not met since 1986. This will be the 3A West conference opener for both teams.
The Red Devils are averaging 321 yards on the ground and 92.7 through the air for an average of 413.7 yards-per-game while yielding 211 per outing. The Panthers have run for 140 yards per game and passed for 106.7 for an average of 246.7 yards-per-contest, while giving up 207.7.
The Panthers boast three defensive players in the 3A Class top-15 in Kadden Abraham, Brody Karhu and Dalton Woodworth.
Rigden Wagstaff and Rylie Griggs show the way for Evanston defensively.
