Red Devil volleyball suffers costly conference loss

Posted

EVANSTON — Red Devil volleyball played back-to-back conference games on Wednesday and Thursday of last week against quadrant-leading Star Valley in Evanston and versus the Lady Wolves in Green River the following day. Head coach Tera Lawlar had previously told the Herald that the scheduling was going to make things tough on her squad. Evanston took the second-ranked Lady Braves to five sets before a victor was declared in an emotionally-charged “Pink Game” from Red Devil Gym that Star Valley ultimately won.

Evanston then boarded a bus to Green River the very next day to face another 4A Southwest opponent in the Lady Wolves. Evanston battled Green River to a five set home win on Sept. 20, (25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 27-29, 15-11) but the narrow defeat at the hands of Star Valley the night before may have taken the wind out of the sails for Evanston in Green River, as the Lady Wolves picked up a three-set sweep of Evanston in their second conference meeting, (25-21, 25-23, 25-20), though all the sets were close. Green River had not played since a four-set loss to Cody back on Oct. 6.

The loss was a costly one for Evanston in that the teams swapped positions in the 4A Southwest quadrant. Star Valley shows the way with a perfect 5-0 mark in the conference standings, followed by Green River at 3-2, Evanston at 2-3 and Jackson at 0-5.

On the season, the Lady Braves are 22-5. Evanston is 14-14 and Green River in 10-13. Jackson has only one victory on the year, though not all of the Lady Broncs’ games have been reported.

Evanston and Green River will both face Rock Springs on back-to-back days in non-quadrant play, but the two squads could very well end up tied for second place in the 4A Southwest once again, as Evanston closes out the regular and conference season at Jackson on Oct. 20, while Green River will host Star Valley on the same day. Tie-breaking scenarios will then be employed, if the two teams end up with identical 3-3 conference/quadrant records, and could be determined by non-conference results against the likes of Rock Springs and Kelly Walsh.

The regional tournament will call Rock Springs home on Oct. 26 and 27.
