EVANSTON — There are two big changes on the horizon for Red Devil volleyball for the 2018 season. Number one is the new conference alignment that breaks down the 16 teams comprising the 4A classification into four regional, for the most part, quadrants. Evanston will be grouped with Star Valley, Jackson and Green River to form the 4A Southwest. These divisions will also be employed for boys’ and girls’ basketball this winter.
Red Devil volleyball will open the season at Cokeville as they have done for many years. If the schedule holds true to form, Evanston will face the nearby Lady Rebels of Rich County, Paris, Idaho and the nearby Lady Buffs of Mountain View on Friday to determine what bracket they will compete in on Saturday. Evanston almost always qualifies for the championship gold bracket.
The second big change, as mentioned in last Friday’s Herald, is that Red Devil volleyball will host a first-of-its-kind tournament August 31-Sept. 1 rather than traveling to another tournament in Wyoming, Utah or Idaho.
The inaugural “Border War” will see seven teams from Wyoming and seven from Utah go head-to-head at varsity and junior varsity levels with games getting underway at 8 a.m. each day. The last games for Friday’s varsity action are scheduled for 9 p.m. on courts one and two at Red Devil Gym. The junior varsity matches will take place at Davis Middle School.
The field includes Evanston, Lyman, Cokeville, Rock Springs, Star Valley, Riverton and Natrona County from Wyoming, along with South Summit, Park City, Syracuse, Juan Diego, Spanish Fork, Utah Military Academy and Union, representing Utah.
The remaining schedule, somewhat subject to change, as are all prep schedules, goes as follows:
9/7-9/8 at Star Valley Tourney
9/14 at Kelly Walsh
9/15 at Rock Springs
9/18 at Star Valley
9/20 Green River
9/25 Mountain View
9/29 Jackson
10/5 Cody
10/6 Riverton
10/9 Star Valley
10/11 at Green River
10/19 Rock Springs
10/20 at Jackson
10/26-10/27 Regionals at Rock Springs
11/1-11/3 State at Casper
