The Evanston Parks and Recreation District has announced that the Bear River Ice Ponds are now open daily for public ice skating from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting. The Ice Ponds will be lighted for ice skating each night from dusk until 10 p.m. The Ice Ponds are located on the Bear River Greenway off Bear River Drive, adjacent to the Bear Community Center building.
Currently, the natural ice skating surface is more than 8 inches thick, with fair to good ice skating conditions (the ice is rough in spots). The ice thickness is checked and maintained daily by the Evanston Parks Department.
Ice skate rentals are available at the Evanston Recreation and Fitness Center during regular hours of operation, with a variety of youth and adult sizes available. Group rates are also available. Contact the rec center for more information.
