EVANSTON — A 32-year-old Evanston man has been bound over for arraignment in Third District Court on charges of kidnapping and two counts of domestic battery.

Tyler J. Sabey was arrested in January after law enforcement responded to a request for a welfare check on his girlfriend, Rachel Bezanson, due to concerns she was being beaten.

According to an affidavit filed in support of his arrest, when Evanston Police Department officers arrived at the residence Sabey and Bezanson shared, Sabey told them he and his girlfriend had been in several verbal arguments but there had not been any physical fights. When officers interviewed Bezanson, however, she told them about an incident three days earlier in which Sabey had allegedly become physically violent with her and forcefully prevented her from leaving the home for several days. Officers observed multiple bruises, abrasions, cuts and areas of swelling on Bezanson’s head, face, arms, shoulders and legs.

Officers also interviewed a friend of the couple who said he witnessed Sabey punch Bezanson in the head, knocking her to the floor. The friend also stated he saw Sabey prevent Bezanson from leaving the residence.

Sabey is charged with kidnapping for unlawfully confining Bezanson with the intent to inflict bodily injury or terrorize her, as well as two counts of domestic battery. The kidnapping charge is a felony that carries a possible maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment along with a possible fine of $10,000 or both. Each domestic battery count carries a possible term of imprisonment of six months, a $750 fine or both.

Sabey is scheduled to be arraigned in Third District Court at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
