EHS students take 1st place at regional math contest

Posted

Western Wyoming Community College hosted the 2018 Wolsborn-Drazovich Southwest Regional Math Contest on Feb. 27, in the Rushmore Gym.

Seventy-five students, grades 7 through 12 participated in the competition this year. The event is sponsored by TATA Chemicals and Western’s Mathematics Department. TATA Chemicals covered all costs associated with the event — just over $1,500.

Participating schools included Evanston High School, Rock Springs High School, Pinedale High School, Davis Middle School, Evanston Middle School and Wyoming Virtual Academy.

Evanston High School took the top score for Team A (grades 11 and 12), with EHS senior Katy Hatch winning first place with a total of 655 points. As the first-place winner, Katy won a one-year tuition scholarship to Western for being the top A Team contestant.

Pinedale High School won the Top Team B (grades 9-10) position. The 7th and 8th graders on Teams C and D use the competition as an excellent exercise to hone their skills as they prepare to join the higher age brackets and qualify for the A and B teams.

“The math department was excited to host another great math contest at WWCC this year. Students excelled at the quite difficult exam, and the department is always happy to help foster an interest in mathematics. We hope to have even more participation from schools in the southwest region next year,” said Sarah Pauley, associate professor of mathematics at Western.
