EHS grapplers go 5-0 at Braveheart Duals

The Evanston High School wrestling team celebrated New Year’s Eve last Friday by dominating the Braveheart Duals in Ogden, posting a 5-0 record.

A handful of Red Devils —- including Braunson Sims at 120 pounds, Jaxin Moore at 126 pounds, Riley Kohler at 138 pounds, Ethan Reichenberg at 144 pounds and Rigan Hoggatt at 220 pounds —- finished undefeated for the tournament. Kyson Hamilton (132 pounds), Jesse Page (157 pounds), Carsen Knight (175 pounds) and Kody Rex (190 pounds) all finished 4-1.

“We had a really good tournament,” said EHS head coach Larry Wagstaff. “Anytime you go 5-0 anywhere, it’s pretty special.”

The Red Devils opened the tournament with a 47-21 win over host Ben Lomond, winning 11 of 14 matches. Kolby Hamilton (106 pounds), Ethan Reichenberg (144 pounds), Kaden Cummings (150 pounds), Brady Roberts (157 pounds), Carsen Knight (175 pounds) and Carson VanGieson (285 pounds) all won by pin, while those winning by decision included Braunson Sims (120 pounds), Jaxin Moore (126 pounds), Kyson Hamilton (132 pounds), Riley Kohler (138 pounds) and Rigan Hoggatt (215 pounds).

Against Logan High School in round two, the Red Devils won 10 of 13 matches, en route to a 56-24 win. Braunson Sims, Moore, Reichenberg, Knight, Hoggatt and Kolby Hamilton won by pin, while a decision was earned by Kohler. Kody Rex (190 pounds), Cummings and Jesse Page (157 pounds) won by forfeit.

Against Box Elder in round three, the Red Devils won 10 of 14 matches for a 59-24 win. Braunson Sims, Moore, Kyson Hamilton, Kohler, Reichenberg, Page, Hunter Sims and Knight won by pin, while Rex and Hoggatt won their matches by forfeit.

In round four the Red Devils defeated Cedar Valley 67-11, winning 12 of 14 matches. Moore, Hamilton, Reichenberg, Knight, Hoggatt, Kyson Hamilton, Kolby Hamilton and Braunson Sims won their matches by pin, while Page and VanGieson won decisions. Kohler, Hunter Sims and Rex won by forfeit.

In the tournament’s final round, the Red Devils defeated Ogden High School 65-7, with Kyson Hamilton, Kohler, Reichenberg, Hunter Sims, Hoggatt, VanGieson and Braunson Sims winning their matches by pin. Page, Rex and Kolby Hamilton won by forfeit.

“We had quite a few wrestlers who were able to win most —- if not all —- their matches, so that was good to see,” Wagstaff said. “Braunson Sims at 120, Jaxin Moore at 126 went undefeated, Riley Kohler is really coming on, doing a good job for us. Jaxin is pretty handy, he’ll do well. Ethan Reichenberg is wrestling well —- he works really hard, and is starting to figure things out. He went undefeated, as did Rigan [Hoggatt]. Those are the guys that set the tone for everybody else.”

The Red Devils will be back in Utah this weekend, wrestling in a tournament at Herriman High School. It’s a tournament the Red Devils are familiar with, though they didn’t make the trip last year, due to COVID.

“We’ll see some pretty good teams in Herriman,” Wagstaff said. “Friday will be a JV tournament, and Saturday will be the varsity. We’ve had a pretty good week of practice —- the weather has been kind of interesting, so we’re trying to get the kids out of here earlier. The kids are responding well, so we’ll see how it goes.”
