EVANSTON — “We had 85 people attend Lunafest this year, and we raised over $4,800 for our Soroptimist programs to empower women and girls in our community,” said Jessica Kendrick, chair of the Lunafest fundraiser.
The event was held May 6 at Aspen Cinemas, where owners, David and Emily Huggins, donate space and reserve two theater screens each year for the Lunafest celebration. Young women handing out free Lunar Bars, provided by the Lunar Bar company, greeted people at the doors of the theater.
Refreshments provided by the Soroptimists were available near the theater concession stand, while auction items and wine were in the party area near the front of the theater.
Those in attendance were able to bid on the numerous silent auction items, which included 17 pieces of artwork by local women artists, 16 purses filled with items centered on a variety of themes such as Halloween, Wyoming, women’s suffrage, relaxation, movie night and others. Raffle tickets were also sold for ten other filled purses.
The main auction item of a handmade quilt was won by Nancy Stevenson, who incidentally won the quilt from last year’s Lunafest auction.
According to Kendrick, the evening was very successful. Those who attended attested to having a wonderful time mingling, socializing, eating and then watching eight short films by and about women.
“Lunafest is fun and inspiring and one of the most memorable girls’ nights out of the year. We are already excited for next year’s event and hope even more women in the community join us,” Kendrick said.
