Cazin’s under new local ownership

EVANSTON — One of Evanston’s landmark businesses has changed hands. As of Dec. 1, Cazin’s is now owned by Bateman Enterprises, LLC.

Roger Cazin, long-time co-owner, said the entire business has been sold to Evanston residents Laurie Bateman and her family. Other than the new ownership, however, Roger said he doesn’t expect a lot to change, at least not right away.

“Their general philosophy is leaving things as they are until they see what happens,” said Roger. “They’re not going to upset the apple cart.”

Brad Bateman will be the new on-site manager, though Roger is going to stay on part-time and Gordon Cazin will still work there full-time.

Roger said he and Gordon have a wealth of knowledge between them that they plan on sharing. “We don’t want them to make the same mistakes we’ve already made in the past if we can save them from it,” he said.

The name of the business is going to remain Cazin’s and the hardware side will still be an Ace franchise. Roger said there are many requirements associated with that franchise that dictate business decisions.

He said there will be more options for change in the furniture side of the store that may occur in the future. “As time goes along, naturally everybody wants to express themselves differently.”

Although Roger and Gordon will both be staying on at Cazin’s, Roger said they just came to the conclusion that it was time to sell. “After 50 years straight, well, that’s just a long time to be in one place. There just comes a time — we had to decide when and where, and this was it.”
