EVANSTON — Degory Day of Evanston has a lot to be proud of after winning the Wyoming Geographic Bee in Casper on April 4 of this year.

Day will receive $100 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D. C., to represent Wyoming in the national finals of the Bee at National Geographic Society headquarters in May.

There, he will compete against mostly eighth graders, much like he did in the state bee.

Approximately 100 fourth to eighth grade students from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, U. S. Atlantic and Pacific territories, and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools competed in the state level bees with only one winner from each area winning the championship. Day will compete against 53 other students for the national title.

“I think I goofed off sometimes,” Day said. “But I kept studying.”

The national competition will be aired on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD and will be moderated by award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien. The competition will take place May 19-21.

First prize in the national competition is a $50,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

Day was able to answer all three championship questions correctly, including what sea in the Arctic Ocean separates the Taymyr Peninsula from Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The correct answer given by Day was Kara.

After preliminary rounds, the last two steps in the national competition Day will face are the final rounds where students go from 10 contestants down to the last two that will be in the final championship round.
