EVANSTON — The EHS boys swimming and diving team competed in meets on back-to-back days this weekend.

On Friday, the Red Devils finished fourth overall in Green River. On Saturday, they finished second at their home invitational at the Davis Middle School pool.

A highlight for the weekend was the Red Devils picking up their first state qualifier in swimming. Carson Constantine broke the 2:04.00 mark set by the state for 4A on Saturday to become the third Red Devil to guarantee a spot in state competition, and the first swimmer.

“He qualified last year, so it was really more of a matter of when he would do it, not if,” EHS head coach Kate Schmidt said.

On Friday, the EHS team picked up 25 points.

In the 200 freestyle, Hans Jetkoski Defries was the top finisher for EHS with a time of 2:07.48 in the finals. That was good enough for fifth place. Gabe Halliday was seventh in the event (2:10.33), Buckley Martin was eighth (2:11.48) and Brennan Williams was ninth (2:12.23).

Constantine was the highest Red Devil placer in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:33.83. He finished seventh. Also competing in the 200 IM were Joseph Hopkin (2:42.31) and Brandon Sitz (2:45.01), who finished in 13th and 14th place.

In the 50 freestyle, Cody Schmidt came in ninth with a time of 26.67, which was just under the designated time for state qualification in 3A. Though the time won’t get the young Schmidt into state competition, coach Schmidt was impressed with his performances on Friday and Saturday.

Also in the 50 freestyle was Braden Tethal, who came in 10th (27.86). Jaxson Heyrend finished 17th in the event with a time of 29.89 and Joseph Beachell was 19th with a time of 32.45. Beachell was another swimmer coach Schmidt singled out as someone who is continuing to improve every meet.
