Rendezvous to see second female booshway

Modified: Sunday, Aug 18th, 2013

Mike Bird, Bear River Rendezvous Booshway Samantha Miller and Evanston City Councilman and Evanston Sports World store manager Evan Perkes show off the 50-caliber Thompson black powder rifle that will be given away in a raffle at this year’s event. The rifle was donated by Evanston Sportsworld for the 26th annual event.

EVANSTON — History will be made this year at the annual Bear River Rendezvous. For the second time in the history of the rendezvous and the Bear River Mountain Men club, a female booshway has been elected.

Samantha Miller, aka Lil Red Moose, will be in charge of the 26th annual rendezvous. The event is scheduled to run Aug. 23-25 at Bear River State Park.

Segundo Rick Charlesworth, aka Many Horses, will assist Miller in keeping the event running smoothly and making sure all items meet requirements for trade goods.

All items must fit the era and must, within reason, be found at a pre-1840 rendezvous. Other events during the rendezvous include a hawk and knife throw, frying pan toss, raffles, Dutch oven cook-off, big boom shoot, fun shoot and primitive demonstrations.

“This club has enough confidence in a woman to let me take control of this year’s Bear River Rendezvous,” Miller stated, according to a press release. “A woman booshway would have never emerged in the American fur trade from 1816 to 1850. We plan to continue our yearly gatherings in August, no matter how the economy chooses our participants and spectators that year.”

Again this year, the Candy Canon will be in play as one of the most popular events with the younger set and the main raffle this year includes a Thompson 50-caliber black powder rifle donated by Evanston Sports World.

Many other items have also been donated for other raffles being held on Saturday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Ticket buyers for the raffles must be present to win.

The rendezvous is free to the public with food and drink available and period items for sale by various vendors.

The event has support from Bear River State Park Superintendent Wade Henderson, the state of Wyoming, Evanston City and Uinta County. Further information may be obtained by calling Samantha Miller at (435) 864-7838 or Rick Charlesworth at (801) 726-5422.
