County welcomes new VSO

Posted: Tuesday, Jul 16th, 2013

Amanda Manchester

EVANSTON — Uinta County has a new veteran service officer. Amanda Mancheste, is available to meet with and assist veterans within the county immediately, though, according to a release, she will not be fully certified as a VSO until mid-September.

Manchester is an Air Force veteran with six years of service — four active duty — including a tour in Iraq in 2005.

“The daughter and granddaughter of veterans, I was born in Converse County and raised in Natrona County,” Manchester told the Herald in an email. “I enlisted in the Wyoming Air National Guard in 2002 as an air traffic controller. While serving on active duty orders, I met my husband, Steve, also a Wyoming native and veteran. We were stationed together at Hill AFB in northern Utah. During my time in service…I provided radar air traffic control services to the Utah Test and Training Range in the Utah west desert, training pilots in war-like simulations prior to their assignments overseas.”

Manchester’s husband also served in Iraq, in 2007 and 2008. They relocated to Evanston after they were both honorably discharged in 2008. Manchester made use of the military’s GI Bill to attend Weber State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in history, as well as working at the school’s veterans’ affairs office. She also boasts a son, 2 1/2-year-old Henry.

Manchester is available to work with veterans on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.to noon, by appointment only, at her office in the Human Services Building, 350 City View Dr., Suite 200, in Evanston. Beginning in August, she will travel to the Bridger Valley on Wednesdays, weather permitting, to maintain office hours from 10 a.m to noon at the Lyman Town Hall, and from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Mountain View Town Hall.

Manchester can be reached at (307) 789-7194, ext. 5, or via email at veteran@uintacounty.com.
