Local man gets ‘free’ cab ride, stay in jail

EVANSTON — It turns out there really is no such thing as a free ride, a lesson Seth Kauffman of Evanston recently discovered. Kauffman was arraigned on one charge of theft of services, after it was alleged Kauffman, while in Salt Lake City, Utah, hired a taxi to bring him back home to Evanston. When he arrived in Evanston, Kauffman allegedly tried to run away without paying for the cab fare.

Kauffman pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to pay $150 to the Crime Victim’s Fund, $40 in court costs, $190 in restitution to the cab company, serve 180 days in jail, with 178 suspended, and complete six months of unsupervised probation.
