EVANSTON — Multiple sclerosis is believed to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system — the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves — of an estimated 400,000 Americans, according to figures from the National MS Society. And while much about the disease is still unknown, what is known is that millions of Americans around the country are rallying in support of efforts to fight it during their annual Walk MS events.

Evanston’s Walk MS 2013 event is slated for this Saturday, April 27, at the Bear River Pavilion. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the walk to follow at 10 a.m. A pancake breakfast will be served to participants prior to the walk.

Donations made at the event will benefit the National MS Society’s work to find a cure for multiple sclerosis.

According to a release from organizers, the annual walk event includes nearly 350,000 walkers nationally in 600 locations. In 2012, the events raised $50 million. Three of four walkers at the events are typically women, the release said, who are between the ages of 25 and 54. Those demographics closely correspond to the profile of people who have multiple sclerosis.
