Boyd Allan Hager

Boyd Allan Hager passed away at his home on Feb. 27, 2013, after a long illness.

He was born on Dec. 23, 1943, in Sherburn, Minn., the son of Alfred and Vivian (Stewart) Hager. Boyd grew up on the family farm in Minnesota. He was the middle child of nine siblings. He had five brothers and three sisters.

He served his country in the U.S. Army from June 1961 to October 1964 as a demolition expert. He married Barbara Armstrong Nov. 20, 1971, in South Beloit, Illinois. They had three children, two girls and one boy. Boyd worked as a fireman for many years, and also a factory worker for Hormel Foods.

After a back injury prevented him from doing heavy labor, he decided to become a professional clown, and had his face registered with the Professional Clown Association in 1982. Boyd and Barb divided up their homes between Minnesota and Montana, and moved to Evanston in 2005, where he enjoyed many years as a crossing guard for the Evanston school district. He was known for the pocket full of candies he enjoyed handing out to any child he saw.

Boyd enjoyed fishing and could be found on most days at Sulphur Creek, with pole in hand. His fishing stories grew every year, along with his collection of poles.

He enjoyed his coffee and liked sitting outside watching the birds flock to the many bird feeders he and Barb filled almost daily. Boyd had many hobbies; a couple of them were making wishing wells out of agates, and his paintings. He took pride in making these items and giving them away, and it gave him a sense of satisfaction that he made something someone wanted.

Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Alfred Hager; a daughter, Lynn (Hager-Salmon) Tisland; one brother, Jim Hager; and two sisters, Leah Baumhaufer and Erna Adams.

Boyd will be missed by his wife, Barbara, of Evanston; a daughter, Becky (Stan) Aimone, of Ft. Bridger, and their two daughters, Isabella and Victoria. He is also survived by a son, Boyd (Tammy) Hager, of Belgrade, Mont.; their son Alexander; and a daughter, Jozy.

He is also survived by Lynn’s children, Angela Salmon, and a daughter, Brooklyn; son Colton of Bloomington, Minn.; daughter Casey (Justin Wheeler) Salmon; son, Jaxon of Isanti, Minn.; and son Dustin Salmon, also of Minnesota.

And he is survived by sister Jettie (Al) Harp, of Holcomb, Wisc.; and brothers Jerry Hager of Wymore,  Neb., Dan (Maggie) Hager, of Wymore, Donald Hager, of Sheldon, Wisc., Alfred-Babe (Patti) Hager, of Wisconsin; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, March 2, at 3 p.m. at the Uinta Bible Baptist Church. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Crandall Funeral Home of Evanston.
