LARAMIE — The Evanston Middle School Challenge Spanish class attended the first annual University of Wyoming World Language Day Competition in Laramie on Feb. 1-2. Students from around the state grouped together to go on a tour of the UW campus, enjoyed dinner in the Washakie Dining Hall, competed in a poetry declamation/song contest, learned about languages offered at UW, such as Spanish, French, Arabic and Chinese, and were able to participate in a World Language Fair.

The middle school students prepared a song in Spanish that they performed in front of a crowd of over 200 Wyoming world language students. The competition included high school students from all over the state; the EMS students were the only middle school group in attendance.

The competition was divided into six levels, depending on language proficiency. The Evanston students, being beginning learners, were placed in Level 1, where they competed against high school students. After a nerve-wracking performance of “Mambo, Mambo” in front of the large crowd, EMS claimed victory, earning the first place award!

The students who participated included Breanna Beaslin, Jacob Benner, Garrett Christensen, Mishelle Frame, Ben Fuller, Kelly Myers, Taylor Myers, Makayla Nelson, Erin O’Harra & Alyssa Velasquez. Teacher: Amy Velasquez
