Marion Rollins Neilsen ~ Sept. 1, 1928 – Feb. 6, 2013

Posted: Tuesday, Feb 12th, 2013

Marion Rollins Neilsen

Marion was born in Rock Springs along with her twin sister, Marie, to Thorald Bryant and Thora Hatch Rollins, in the living quarters behind her grandparents’ bakery. Marion and Marie were third and fourth in what would later become a family of six children.

The family lived in Chicago, Ill., until 1943, at which time they returned to Wyoming and settled in Lovell, where Marion and Marie graduated from high school. After graduation, the twins attended the Denver Business Institute in Denver, Colo.

On Dec. 7, 1949, Marion married Ralph “Swede” Nielsen in a ceremony at her mother’s home in Lovell. The next year their son, Ralph, was born in Casper. Swede worked for Mountain Bell Telephone and Telegraph in the construction division, so the family was on the move for the next eight years, finally settling in Cheyenne. In 1969, they purchased the Wagon Wheel Ranch just outside of Cheyenne, near the town of Burns.

Marion worked as a secretary for the state of Wyoming Department of Education during these years, retiring in 1982. Swede and Marion sold the ranch in 1984 and moved to Ft. Collins, Colo. Swede passed away in 1990, and Marion moved to Evanston to be near her sister, Marie. She enjoyed her many years in Evanston and the two sisters were inseparable, always dressed alike, and almost impossible to tell apart. After Marie passed away in 2008, Marion moved to Vancouver, Wash., to be with her son, Ralph, and his wife, Kat.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, during her younger years, was an avid bowler and a talented seamstress, making her own beautifully-crafted wedding dress out of a parachute, which she proudly showed to anyone who was interested in seeing it. She loved her family and enjoyed socializing with her many friends and acquaintances.

Marion passed away Wednesday night, Feb. 6, 2013, at the Stonebridge Senior Care Facility in Vancouver, with her son by her side. She is survived by her son, Ralph (Kat) Nielsen, of Vancouver; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Thorald (Genie) Rollins, of Brigham City, Utah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her twin, Marie Wold, of Evanston; two other sisters, Marjorie Rollins, who died in childhood, and Delilah Call of Perry, Utah; and a brother, Robert Rollins, of Orem, Utah.

Cremation has taken place, and a private family memorial will be held at a later date.
