Robotics programs for youths offered

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 22nd, 2013

EVANSTON — Uinta County 4-H is excited to invite youths to join in on the fun of robotics. 4-H will be offering two different robotics programs this year, with the first starting Feb. 11.

In a partnership with Youth Opportunities Unlimited! and the 21st Century grant, the 4-H underwater robotics program will teach youths how to build a robot and drive it underwater. These robots can swim, dive, and they can move. Not only can they sink or float, but these submerged machines will be built by youth. The underwater robots can go forward and backward at the hands of youths and their teammates.

The project meetings will include:

• Using a soldering iron to build robots. Youths will learn about technology in a fun way, including areas such as electronics, circuitry and remote controls.

• After building the robots, youths will take them out to explore plant life and vegetation under the ice.

• Engaging in a fun competition as youths compete in races and complete obstacle courses with the robots.

Remember, some robots seem to have a mind of their own, but that’s all part of the learning process. All project meetings will be held at the YOU! Center. Please enter through the front doors and check in.

Meeting dates will be:

• Feb. 11, 4-5 p.m.

• Feb. 12, 4-5 p.m.

• Feb. 13, 1-3 p.m.

• Feb. 18, 4-5 p.m.

• Feb. 19, 4-5 p.m.

• Feb. 20, 4-5 p.m.

• Feb. 25, 4-5 p.m.

• Feb. 26, 4-5:30 p.m.

Youths do not need to be enrolled in 4-H to participate in this fun program; they simply need to register at either the YOU! Center or the 4-H office, to establish a count of how many youths are interested in participating in the project series. The YOU! Center can be reached at (307) 444-4968; the 4-H office’s number is (307) 783-0570.

Youth ages 8-18 are welcome to come and participate., and should sign up by Feb. 7 to join in on the fun of underwater robotics.

The second program will kick off March 9 at 2 p.m. at the UW Extension Office in Evanston. In these sets of project meetings, youth will learn about the NXT robot, and how to program it. They will learn about “mini sumo” robots, how to complete a maze with their robots and more.

These project meetings will be every other Saturday through the month of June. Youths will need to be enrolled in 4-H to participate in this set of project meetings, but it is not too late to sign-up.

For more information on either of these programs, contact the UW Extension Office in Evanston at (307) 783-0570, or stop by 228 Ninth St. to sign up.
