Swimming and diving team hits three meets

GREEN RIVER ó The Red Devils swimming and diving team has had a busy past week, beginning with a dual against the Wolves in Green River, on Wednesday, Jan. 9, followed by a dual against Laramie in the Gem City, on Friday, Jan. 11,†then sticking around in the southeast part of the state for the Cheyenne South Invitational on Saturday.

Versus Green River

While Evanston has ordinarily outscored Green River in multi-team meets, the Wolves managed to edge the Red Devils, 95-87, in head-to-head competition.

Green Riverís A team won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.38, with Evanstonís A team finishing with a time of 2:01.33.

In the 200-yard freestyle Michael Pelletier snagged first place for the Wolves with†a time of 2:05.00. Evanstonís Lucas Sehorn placed second with a 2:05.85. Red Devil Carson Constantine was next, followed by Green Riverís Dilan Nuzum and Brandon McKeehan.

Evanstonís Garrett Walton won the 200 IM with a 2:20.80 state qualifying time. Red Devil Colton Johnson placed second, with Green Riverís Paul Wright, Cody Baker and Ramen Mitchell rounding out the top five places, which awarded points.

Pellatier also†won the 50 freestyle with a 25.57 for the Wolves. Evanstonís Darian Huff and Sam Symes were second and third, Chris Smith of Green River was fourth, with Brennan Williams of Evanston placing fifth.

Three state-qualifying times were met in the 100 butterfly, with Chris Byrd of Green River posting a 1:00.53 for first place,†Paul Wright of Green River ending with†a 1:02.35 and Evanstonís Sam Symes finishing third with a 1:03.72. Chris Macioszekís fourth place finish also scored points for Green River.

Lucas Sehorn won the 100 freestyle for Evanston, with a 57.47. Nuzum took second for the Wolves, with Hans Jetoski-DeFries finishing third for Evanston, followed by teammate Williams and Green Riverís David Maggio.

Maggio won the diving event, with Jon Chandler and James Fleming of Evanston placing second and third.

Walton took top honors in the 500 freestyle for Evanston, with a 5:33.57 state-qualifying mark. Constantine and Buckley Martin finished second and third for the Red Devils, with Green Riverís Ray Stocks and McKeehan rounding out the top five.

Evanstonís A team won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.67, with Green Riverís A team second at 1:46.77. Green Riverís B team placed third.

Chris Byrd of Green River won the 100-yard backstroke with a 57.71 state-qualifying time. Colton Johnson of Evanston was second, with Wolves Cody Baker and Arye Ydiando third and fourth, and Red Devil Eli Tesoro placing fifth.

The Wolves placed first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke, won by Ramen Mitchell with a time of 1:1136, also achieving a state-qualifying mark, with Ray Stocks second. Buckley Martin and Blake Martin placed third and fourth for Evanston, with Ethan Hart in fifth place for Green River.

The 400-yard freestyle relay to finish the meet was won by the Green River A team with a 3:53.76. Second and third place went to the Evanston A and B teams, respectively, with the 4:01.72 the best time of the two.

Versus Laramie

On Friday, against Laramie,†one of the perennial powerhouse programs in Wyoming 4A swimming, Evanston fared well, but†the Plainsmen did top the Red Devils, 101.5 to 72.5. More detailed information, along with comments from swim coach Joe DeLong and diving coach Casey Boyle will appear in our Friday issue.

Cheyenne South Invitational

The Red Devils swimming and diving team took part in the Cheyenne South Invitational on Saturday, with all 12 4A schools competing, along with Scottsbluff, Neb. Cheyenne Central proved they are the team to beat at the midway point of the season, winning the meet with 248 points. Rock Springs placed second with 213.5, followed by Gillette with 207.5, with Laramie in fourth place with 200, rounding out the teams who scored 200 points or better.

Casper Kelly Walsh†placed fifth with 155, with a tie for sixth place between Green River and Riverton, both scoring 77. Cheyenne East, swimming without two of their best swimmers, placed eighth with 71 points, and†then came the Red Devils with 54 points. Scottsbluff was right behind with 51, followed by Sheridan with 18, Cheyenne South with 17 and Natrona County with 6.

Gillette won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.66. Evanston did not place in the top eight to score any points.

The 200 freestyle was won by Connor Vasa of Rock Springs with a 1:50.63 finish. Garrett Walton finished fifth for the Red Devils with a 1:58.55.

Collin Baldacci of Gillette won the 200 IM, posting a 1:57.44.

Kyle White of Central turned in an incredible 21.72 in the 50 freestyle to win that event.

Diving came next, and Jake Rehmeier of Laramie, who owned the best state-qualifying score based on six dives, won the Cheyenne South Invitational with a 430.55 score. The Evanston divers did not have a top eight placing.

Levi Jensen of Kelly Walsh took first place in the 100 butterfly with a 54.40. White of Central also placed first in the 100 freestyle with 47.49. Walton scored points for the Red Devils with his sixth place†and time of†53.02.

Kayden Harbison of Rock Springs set the pace for the distance swimmers in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 5:03.78. Red Devil Trevor Randall placed sixth with a 5:39.07 to add to the Evanston point total.

The Red Devils did not place in the top eight in the 200 freestyle relay, won by Cheyenne Central with a 1:32.91.

The 100 backstroke was also won by Gilletteís Baldacci, finishing with a 53.03, with Kelly Walshís Jensen winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.10.

The Red Devils did earn points in the 400 freestyle relay, placing eighth with a 3:46.92. Gilletteís A team won with a 3:22.06.

Three consecutive home competitions highlight the schedule, with a dual against the Rock Springs Tigers scheduled for this Thursday, Jan. 17, beginning at 4 p.m.; Evanstonís turn to host the Southwest District Meet gets under way at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and Red Devils swimming and Diving plays host to Cheyenne East and Cheyenne Central on Friday, Jan. 25.
