EPRD hopes to open ice ponds by Jan. 1

Posted: Friday, Dec 28th, 2012

EVANSTON — The Evanston Parks and Recreation District has announced current conditions for public ice skating, cross country skiing and sledding during the holidays.

Snow and weather conditions have prevented the Bear Ice Pond from freezing thick enough to allow snow removal equipment on the soft ice. The ice thickness and weather conditions are being monitored daily, and it is hoped the ice will be thick enough to open by Jan. 1, or sooner.

For current ice conditions, and for ice skate rental information, call the recreation center at (307) 789-1770.

Cross country ski trail grooming is planned as soon as snow conditions permit at the Purple Sage Golf Course Nordic Center, Aspen Elementary School and the Bear River State Park. The Lily Lake cross country area, 30 miles south of Evanston on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains, is open with fair to good cross country ski conditions.

Cross country skis and snow shoe rentals are available at the Purple Sage Pro Shop. For rental information, call the Pro Shop at (307) 789-2383.

The “Buffalo Run” sledding and tubing hill located at the Bear River State Park East of the Travel Information Center is now open for sledding daily, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., weather permitting. Sheltered picnic tables, restrooms and public parking are available.

For more information, call the Travel Information Center at (307) 789-6430.
