GUEST COLUMN: An update, and much thanks

Posted: Tuesday, Mar 19th, 2013

Itís five months later, and here I am writing another letter to the editor. As most of you know by now, my husband Donovan suffered a brain bleed last summer and was recovering fairly well until late October.

Since then, he has had a drastic decline in his health, and is now home bound. He cannot walk, bathe, dress, eat or do much of anything without at least two people helping him. He can hardly speak coherently, and has trouble swallowing. His fatigue is even worse than before. We have seen several physicians, and no one has any definitive answers as to why he got so much worse so quickly.

Throughout all of the testing for more answers, a mass was found on Donovanís lung, and on his testicle. These tumors tested positive for cancer, and were deemed as a possible source of the changes we have seen.

On February 8, Donovan had surgery to have his right testicle removed and, on Feb. 13, 14, and 15, he received high dose radiation therapy on the spot on his lung. Both of these treatments were done in Casper. On Feb. 16, we moved from Rock Springs to Worland, in order to live closer to his parents. We are currently trying to get him into an inpatient rehab facility in Casper.

While all of this was going on, and unbeknownst to me, a benefit and auction were being planned and organized in order to raise money to help us with these continuing medical expenses. Once again, my family and myself were completely overwhelmed by the turnout and by the amount of support shown by the community of Evanston.

As it has been said time and time before, Evanstonís community support is second to none when in comes to helping one of their own in need. Hopefully, as I have said before, Donovan and I will some day have the ability and opportunity to pay it forward and help others as we have been helped. Words cannot be found to express our gratitude.

Specifically, I would like to say a huge ďthank youĒ to James Horton, Chelsea Fenus, Melissa Lyon, Braedi Siemers, Shantel Seppala and Jon, Caty Millburg, Jessie Bateman, Mary Ann Van Syoc, Nicole and Dixie Ross, Michelle Walbridge and Colt Klements, the St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church community, and everyone else who donated items, participated in the auction, or helped to organize and make the night possible. I am sorry if I missed anyone, but it is impossible to list you all!

Most importantly I would like to give a HUGE, HUGE THANK YOU to Dani and Austin Barber, as well as Marian McLean, who spearheaded the entire event with planning, organizing and making sure the word got out. This could not have happened without them, and their generosity is inspiring.

Once again, thank you to everyone and God bless you all!
