Janet Leigh Smart Wells ~ July 10, 1952 Ė Jan. 12, 2013

Janet, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed from this world after a fall from an icy trail in Canyonlands National Park. We grieve for a future without this extraordinary person, but Janet will remain in the lives of everyone who knew her.

Janet was born in Plainfield, N.J. The Smart family moved to Golden, Colo., in the late 1960s. Janetís love and concern for others led her to a career in nursing, and she graduated from the University of Northern Colorado. She then joined the Peace Corps in 1980 and took her nursing skills, love and compassion to the people of Belize.

Janet served and cared for people in Colorado, New York, Utah, Nevada and, in the last few years, in her adopted hometown of Evanston.

Janetís love of the outdoors and healthy outdoor activities took her to many places in the world: Nepal, the Yukon, around the U.S. and most especially in the Rocky Mountains and Canyonlands. Runner, biker, skier, hiker and backpacker, Janet never postponed the things she wanted to do. She often joined the activities she loved with fundraising for others, participating each year in Denverís Turkey Trot, Bolder Boulder and other events.

A regular participant in the Wyoming Senior Olympics, she won multiple gold medals in several events. In 2011, Janet was named Olympian of the Year to recognize her dedication to the ,nd for getting other people involved in the healthy and inspiring competitive events.

Janet is survived by her parents, Bruce and Jane Smart; her sister, Cathy (Steve) Trammel; her brother, Bill (Carla) Smart; her loving nieces, Krista Hadley Smart, Lindsay Trammel; and nephews Read Trammel and Kevin Smart.

Janetís family is overwhelmed with the love and support we are receiving from her friends, especially the wonderful people of Evanston. We are also comforted by the knowledge that Janet was doing something she loved in a beautiful part of the West, where she spent many happy times.

Celebrations of Janetís life are being planned for Evanston, Denver and Canyonlands.
