RIVERTON — Nearing the end of her 13th year at the helm of EHS volleyball, head coach Tera Lawlar finds herself in unusual territory.

More often than not, heading into the regional tournament meant somewhat of a bye week for the Lady Red Devils. Since her teams would be ranked among the top two teams in the West 4A division, EHS would know regardless of the outcome at regionals, a trip to state would await them a week down the road.

The Lady Red Devils head into regionals ranked fourth in the West, which is precisely how many teams from the division will earn a bid to state in Casper that will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 2.

EHS will have to prove its regular-season ranking was no fluke in Riverton by winning two games today. Should the Lady Red Devils survive through today’s elimination rounds, their ticket to state will have been punched.

“It’s nerve-racking,” Lawlar said. “Besides cuts, for me personally, it’s the worst part of the job because you never know really what you’re going to have and to lay it on the line for one night, I hate that … When you get to regional week, and you have a bye, obviously, there’s not the pressure.”

The Lady Red Devils will kick off regional action against the Rock Springs Lady Tigers at 1 p.m. today. EHS holds a season split with the Lady Tigers.
