EVANSTON — Scott Carlson competes as an Evanston High School Red Devil athlete. In fact, in his specialty, he is one of the best in the state. But there are no cheerleaders, pep rallies, and very likely, nary an award in the school’s trophy case, for his particular sport. Nor a team bus to transport Carlson and the one teammate he has, sort of, in his younger brother, Waylon. You see, the Carlson boys participate in rodeo, and that includes the high school season. Scott is a bull rider, and Waylon a bareback bronc rider, ranked second and fifth in the state, respectively, in their events.

It may seem ironic, that in the Equality State, just as often referred to as “The Cowboy State,” rodeo is not an officially sanctioned sport in high school. There is no listing on the Wyoming High School Activities Association website, although, WyoPreps.com does cover the sport, and the Wyoming High School Rodeo Association does so in more detail, on their website, www.whsra.org

“My brother and I are the only two competing in the state of Wyoming from Evanston,” Scott told the Herald.
