Rich Lady Rebels head into regionals on 17-win streak

Posted: Tuesday, Feb 12th, 2013

RANDOLPH — The Rich Lady Rebels look to recapture the 1A state title in earnest this Wednesday, Feb. 13, as the Region 21 champion meets Region 20 regular-season champion Panguitch in the opening round at the Sevier Valley Center with a scheduled 2:30 p.m. tip-off.

The Beehive State begins their seasons earlier than their neighbors in the Equality State, and correspondingly will end their seasons a bit earlier. The tournaments are staggered perhaps a bit more than in Wyoming.

The Rebels boys team, for instance, ranked fourth in 1A, with a 12-5 overall mark and a Region 21 best 6-1 finish, won’t begin tournament play until Saturday, Feb. 22. Meanwhile, back to the Lady Rebels, and another fantastic season, so far.

The Lady Rebels have been ranked third most of the year. A loss very early in the year, all the way back to Nov. 17 against Millford, which followed a Nov. 16 win over Bryce Valley, was their last. Scott Ferguson’s squad has since strung together a duly impressive 17 consecutive wins, including an unblemished 8-0 Region 21 record.

Due to upsets in tournament play, the Lady Rebels have a tough opening round matchup, facing Panguitch, which should take place later on in the brackets. It’s not unfamiliar territory, as last year Bryce Valley won the Region 20 regular season before being upset in the tournament, and that’s who Rich drew in the opening round.

Okay, let’s take some of the above back. The Lady Rebels won all the marbles in 2011, but were actually runners-up to St. Joseph’s last season, so it’s not a title defense, but Rich has certainly been in the championship mix. Here are the Utah 1A girls teams that qualified for the state tournament, with their records in parentheses:

1. Duchesne Eagles (11-10)

2. Escalante Moquis (7-13)

3. Green River Pirates (14-7)

4. Intermountain Christian Lions (7-12)

5. Layton Christian Eagles (11-7)

6. Legacy Prep Lions (2-13)

7. Manila Mustangs (18-3)

8. Milford Tigers (16-7)

9. Monument Valley Cougars (16-4)

10. Monticello Buckaroos (11-10)

11. Panguitch Bobcats (15-6)

12. Piute Thunderbirds (17-5)

13. Rich Rebels (18-1)

14. St. Joseph Jayhawks (18-0)

15. Tintic Miners (7-14)

16. Wayne Badgers (10-11)

17. Wendover Wildcats (11-9)

These are the team leaders for the 18-1 Lady Rebels, who averaged 47.4 points per game, while yielding just 30.

#32 Alisa Petersen, Sr., Center (16.3 ppg)

#4 Emma Peart, Sr., Forward (7.9 ppg)

#5 Alyssa Brown, Sr., Forward, (7.5 ppg)

#1 Lynzee Wallentine, Sr., Guard (5.3 ppg)

#23 Cami Lamborn, Jr., Guard (4.9 ppg)

Many in the Utah Media believe the Rich Lady Rebels have what it takes to win it all in 2013, and at least one media representative in neighboring Wyoming is in agreement.
