The Evanston swimming and diving team had a tough weekend, losing to Cheyenne East, Cheyenne Central and Laramie, though some individuals performed well.

“For some individuals it went great, but as a team we didn’t fare so well,” coach Jason Crompton said. “Some of the kids doing so well makes up for a bad team effort sometimes.”

One of the individuals who performed well was Brock Martin. Martin broke the school record in 1-meter diving for six dives.

“It was great,” Crompton said. “He was really pleased with that.”

Trey Griffith dropped his best time this season in the breaststroke by two seconds at the Red Devils’ home meet on Friday. He finished in 1:05.7.

On Saturday in Green River, James Sitz qualified for the state meet in another event — the 200 individual medley.

“They have the big goal to qualify in all of the swimming events,” Crompton said. “Usually, there’s one event that keeps them from it, but hopefully a couple of them can do it.”

Crompton said the Red Devils have been struggling at their home meets over the past couple of weeks.

“Lately we haven’t been swimming well at home as a team. It’s a good thing we’re not hosting conference,” he said. “I think we might get a little distracted at home. The kids have to go home and do chores or think about schoolwork. When we go on the road, they have a bus ride to get in their minds, ‘The only thing I’m concerned about for the next two hours is swimming.’ That’s the theory I’m going with.”

The swimming season is winding down with less than one month remaining before the state meet.

“We’re starting to taper the guys who haven’t qualified yet, so the hardest part of the season is over for them,” Crompton said. “I’m pleased with the progress we’ve made.”

The Red Devils head to Gillette for competition Friday and Saturday.

“Hopefully, we’ll have some really good times because it’s a fast pool and good competition,” Crompton said.
