EVANSTON Ė With the candy cannon going off and scattering goodies for the younger set, the Bear River Rendezvous went on as planned Aug. 23-25. Booshway Samantha Miller called the rendezvous a success for another year.

The pre-1840 recreation event is put on by the Bear River Mountain Menís Association each year in late August, just prior to the Labor Day weekend. This yearís event included black powder gun shoots, tomahawk and knife throwing contests, archery competition and the frying pan toss.

Vendors displayed items hand-made for the period and displays of pre-1840 roof shake maker Scott Greer and Hobble Creek Forge blacksmith Shane Hall.

Greer was Booshway for the event in 2011.

Hall comes from Salem, Utah where he holds classes on blacksmithing at Hobble Creek Forge. Results of the shoots and other competitions will be run when the information becomes available.

Last year, former Booshway Mike Bird ran the show but this year Samantha Miller was named Booshway with Rick Charlesworth named as Segundo.

This is only the second time a woman has been named Booshway for the event. The Bear River Mountain Menís Association was founded in 1988 and this yearís event is the 26th gathering held in Evanston.

The term Booshway historically meant the head man at the Fort Union Trading Post on the Missouri River where it meets the Yellowstone. The term Segundo is a Spanish word meaning the second in command.

The organization is a tight-knit group of modern-day mountain man enthusiasts who recreate a short time period in American history called the Fur Trade Years.
